Eric and his man-servant, Grimsby, and a crew of sailors are enjoying another day out in sea. Eric overheard the sailors talking about King Triton, ruler of the mer-people. It makes him curious, but Grimsby tells that it is just nonsense.
As Eric was celebrating his eighteenth birthday out on the sea, a storm hits and lightning sets the ship on fire. Everyone manages to escape, but Eric, goes to the burning ship to save his pet, Max. He manages to toss Max into the sea, but he is stuck as the fire reaches to some explosives, causing the ship to explode.
Ariel finds Eric unconsious on the water. She drags him to shore, and sings to him. Before he can regain consiousness, Max and Grimsby arrive, forcing Ariel to dive to the water. He tells Grimsby that a girl had saved her with the most beautiful singing voice. Grimsby thinks that he has swallowed much sea-water, carries him back to the palace.
